About the Hawvers

Hawver News Company has been around since 1991. It’s a small news-gathering/writing/editing business in Topeka, Kansas. It is owned by Vickie Griffith Hawver and Martin Hawver, who met and married while both
worked at the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper.

Probably the most well-known of HNC project was Hawver’s Capitol
Report, the respected, non-partisan news service reporting on Kansas
government & politics. We started it on June 18, 1993, and sold it on Dec.
16, 2022, to State Affairs Inc., a new national digital news organization
aiming to establish news bureaus in statehouses across the country.

Hawver’s Capitol Report often required 60 hours of work a week from each
of us and we were getting tired! So we sold that publication (but not our company) and we worked in 2023 for the new company during the
transition. Since then we have been kinda “retired” — although mostly we’ve been floundering around trying to figure out how we want to write the next chapter of our lives.

Turns out, that will be producing Hawvers’ Still Booming (hopefully for less than 60 hours a week!).
